THE MICROALGAE COLLECTION

To study alpine microalgae and understand their life cycles and adaptive processes, strains that can be cultivated in laboratory conditions are needed. Strains collected from different mountain areas around the world are available, but they cannot be studied in natural conditions outside of their native regions. The introduction of non-native species can indeed cause irreversible effects on ecosystems’ equilibrium that are particularly difficult to control in the case of microscopic organisms. The purified strains of the collection are cultured under sterile conditions, in illuminated incubators, either in liquid medium or at the surface of solid medium in petri dishes. The conservation of microalgae is a mission of the ALPALGA program in the event that their environment of origin was reduced or disappeared.

PRESENTATION OF THE LAUTARET CULTURE COLLECTION

All the microalgae of the LCC correspond to green algae of the Chlorophyta phylum. The collection of microalgae originates from field campaigns carried out since 2017, from 2,000 meters to more than 3,000 meters above sea level.

THE STRAINS OF THE COLLECTION

The strains are and / or will be presented in the form of descriptive monographies.
